Saturday, June 7, 2008 - A scenic, challenging 55 mile loop winds into the foothills of the Cascades and back to Canby. Once again, the central rest stop will feature food provided by Chris King Precision Components. Chris King makes the best quality components in the world. Chris’s passion is cooking, so this rest stop will be special! Finish off a great century with a bucolic 45 mile loop in historic Champoeg country. Each loop begins and ends at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby.
The Pioneer Century is named to reflect the history of the Champoeg, Canby and Molalla areas. Rich farmland and timber brought the pioneers to this area and this same beauty draws cyclists today. PWTC is offering two loops: a challenging 55 and a bucolic 45 mile route. Ride them both to complete the new Pioneer Century. A bit more difficult than the old Spring, the Pioneer is truly a “bring your camera along” ride.
The 55 mile loop explores the Molalla-Canby area. With such little traffic...you’ll think that you are hearing the Conestoga wagons of the pioneers over the hum of your tires! Idyllic farmland gives way to forests of fir with Mt. Hood peeking over the Cascade foothills as you ascend to Kokel Corner. On your return to the Willamette Valley you will be rewarded with some sweeping smooth descents snaking down forested corridors toward Scotts Mills. Relax and enjoy the last few miles of pastoral valley roads into the fairgrounds.
The 45 mile loop is more rural than remote. Cycle past fields of hops, a heritage rose garden, dairies, farmland and farm stands. You’ll pass Champoeg State Park, home to the first government in the Oregon territory. Experience the smells, sights and sounds of the Champoeg region… this is the Eden at the end of the Oregon Trail.
Multiple sag vehicles on routes.
Elevation gain:
- 45 mile route: 1327 feet
- 55 mile route: 3087 feet
Rest Stops and Amenities:
Coffee and pastries will be served before the event. Both routes will have a rest stop near the half-way mark. PWTC rest stops are renown for their variety of fresh fruit and snacks to fuel your ride. Two water and potty stops are provided on the 55 mile route: one at Molalla City Park and one at the school at the corner of Schneider and Meridian roads. Our pivotal rest stop at the Clackamas Fairgrounds is a highlight of the Pioneer Century.
Chris King Precision Components will provide a freshly prepared lunch at this stop. As most cyclists know, Chris King Precision Components manufactures the finest quality bicycle components, right here in Portland. What most don’t know is that Chris’ other passion is cooking! The folks at Chris King want to support and celebrate cycling with Portland’s’ road biking community. Freshly made fajitas or some new lunch treat? We’ll find out on June 7th. Returning Pioneer riders know that this rest stop is something special! Lunch will be served between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. The Pioneer Century lunch is limited. Last year we served 1200 and had a bit left over. Plan your ride accordingly. Standard rest stop snacks will also be provided at the Fairgrounds.
